Bad Debt: Causes
What is Bad Debt/Credit?
Very often people find themselves steeped in debt which has accumulated over a long period. The financial problems when they become acute appear before the debtor like a monster that is difficult to escape. The reasons are often personal and beyond the control of the person.Sometimes the person immersed in bad credit himself is the reason owing to his habit of financial indiscipline and recklessness. Lack of knowledge in the areas of budgeting, availing the right credit, correct repayment plan, etc. are the factors that compound the phenomenon of bad debt.
Unforeseen Turns
In life things do not always happen on expected lines. A bad credit rating signals financial distress which is brought about by such unfortunate turns as unemployment, bankruptcy, poor health, inadequate income, etc. Also indiscriminate spending, not paying credit card dues (using too many credit cards) and mortgage payments on time reflect a person’s inability to budget and control expenses eventually landing him in the quagmire of bad debt.
Ways Out
Debt consolidation is one way to get rid of bad credit. The debt consolidation package aims to repair the credit rating of a person through suitable refinance and reduction of outgo towards monthly repayments. Depending on the circumstances of individuals, refinance of home loan mortgages and loans for debt consolidation may be the most appropriate solutions for credit repair and getting out of bad debt. However even before that, it is of utmost importance that one initiates the preliminary steps to ensure restoration of credit rating from poor or low to good. These basic steps are paying bills on or before due dates, paying out higher monthly installments on existing loans than the stipulated minimum, making all purchases in cash and avoid using credit cards, not borrowing from one credit card to pay off dues of another credit card, etc. Paying a few dollars more for mortgage payments or paying twice in a month may save money by reducing loan tenure and boost credit rating.
