When Debt Collectors Go Too Far
Foxbusiness has a story on their website by Marshall Loeb with the title, When debt collectors go to far, that comes just a few days after a story titled Rogue debt collectors-how to fight them was on CNN.com.
The media continues to shed bill collectors in a negative light, highlighting the poor and ignoring the good. In marshalls essay he starts with saying “debt collectors can manufacture your life miserable” as though bill collectors are responsible considering a consumer did not pay their bill and now have to pay the consequences.
It is unlucky that there are agencies out there that break the law in order to try and gather more money. For those of us who don’t break the law, reading these types of stories is disturbing since it gives the public the perception that there are only collection agencies that break the law and the agencies that don’t break the
When we take in a story like that, we want to know which agency it is, considering they are hired by someone to do the debt collection job they are doing. What kind of company hires an agency that treats debtors that way? In my opinion the collection agency a company uses is a reflection of that company. When companies hire an agency that is breaking the law, they are in essence breaking the law whether they know about it and let it continue to go on.
I believe debt collectors are much more successful when they treat debtors like they would like to be treated and try to help them and work with them when they can. that is not always the case, debtors can be unhappy, stressed public who take out a lot of their frustrations on you.
